Prehistoric Sites
Prehistoric sites abound in Wyoming and include rock art sites, tipi
rings, lithic scatters, stone circles, bison jumps as well as dinosaur
sites. Nearly every project undertaken in Wyoming turns up a variety of
these sites, some of great significance and some more run-of-the-mill
sites. Nonetheless, we are blessed to enjoy the remnants of ancient
civilizations, both human and animal, and need to do what we can to
protect the important and unique sites which are constantly being
discovered.
In most cases, the Alliance for Historic Wyoming comments only broadly on prehistoric resources, choosing instead to respect the expertise of the allied indigenous peoples. Additionally, the exact location and condition of these sites is kept private from the general public, to protect against vandalism and looting. The Alliance does comment on general management practices as they relate to prehistoric resources and special land use designations that can assist in protecting these resources.
